Australian L-39 Fastjet Pilot Tammy Camilleri is Breaking Barriers

Tammy Camilleri’s journey to becoming a pilot began during the early days of the aviation industry, a time when support for women was scarce. Driven by relentless determination and inspired by her father’s constant encouragement, Tammy pursued her dream, breaking into the male-dominated field of aviation. Today, she stands as an inspiration, having established the Women in Aviation Chapter in Australia and dedicating herself to uplifting women in the industry.

For the first time, Tammy will be flying at Pacific Airshow Gold Coast, a moment of immense personal and professional significance.

“This is the culmination of years of dedication and passion,” Tammy shares.

“It's also an opportunity to showcase the skills and teamwork of the Fastjet Airshow Display Team and to inspire the next generation of aviators.”

Fastjet Adventure Flights has expanded its lineup this year, adding a third aircraft to the team. This addition promises a more dynamic and thrilling performance with complex formations and synchronised manoeuvres. She said the airshow would provide a prestigious platform to demonstrate their capabilities on an international stage.

“The additional aircraft allows for tighter coordination, making our performance truly unforgettable,” Tammy said.

The team will be flying the L-39 Albatros, a high-performance jet trainer known for its agility and reliability.

“The L-39 is ideal for both training and airshow performances,” Tammy said. With excellent handling characteristics and a powerful engine, the aircraft is perfect for executing a wide range of manoeuvres with precision.

This year, the team has added smoke systems to their aircraft, enhancing the visual impact of their display.

“The smoke trails highlight our manoeuvres, making them more visible and dramatic for the audience,” she said. The contrast of the smoke against the blue sky creates stunning visual effects, adding excitement and artistry to the performance.

Preparing for an airshow of this scale involves rigorous training and meticulous planning. The team conducts extensive practice sessions to perfect their manoeuvres and ensure precise coordination. Safety is paramount, with rehearsals for emergency procedures and communication protocols being a key part of their preparation.

As a female pilot in a traditionally male-dominated field, Tammy has faced challenges such as gender bias and a lack of representation. Overcoming these challenges required perseverance, confidence and a strong support network. Through her performance and career, Tammy hopes to inspire young women and girls to pursue their dreams in aviation.

“I want to convey the message that with determination, hard work and the right support, they can overcome any barrier,” she said.

Working alongside her husband, Charlie ‘Squid’ Camilleri, adds a unique dynamic to Tammy’s career.

“We share a deep passion for aviation, which strengthens our personal and professional bond,” she said. Their mutual understanding and trust enhance their teamwork, making their performances seamless.

A typical day as a fastjet airshow pilot and instructor is dynamic and fulfilling. It starts with early morning briefings, followed by practice flights or training sessions. Afternoons may involve ground training, debriefings and mentoring students.

Participating in airshows and engaging with the audience is incredibly rewarding.

“Seeing the excitement and awe in the faces of spectators, especially young aspiring pilots, is truly fulfilling,” said Tammy.

One of the most memorable experiences in Tammy’s career was qualifying as a certified air racer in the Jet Class division of the National Championship Air races in the USA.

“Becoming the 5th woman in the world to hold this certification took 10 years of hard work and dedication,” she proudly shared.

Looking ahead, Tammy aims to continue inspiring and mentoring the next generation of aviators, enhancing her skills, and taking on new challenges.

“Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a more inclusive and supportive aviation community,” she said.

Join us at Pacific Airshow Gold Coast and witness this extraordinary pilot and her team in action, delivering a performance that promises to be both thrilling and inspirational.
